Baking and Me

I absolutely love to bake. This has been my passion, or rather, my obsession for the last 18 months or so. I think we all have this moment in our lives when we finally get around to doing something that we’ve always wanted to do but have been unable to do for some reason or the other. I was a disastrous baker-so much so that even baking “out-of-a-box” felt like an ordeal.

Then, in late 2009, my childhood friend Zia paid me a visit. Zia just happens to be an excellent baker and we soon got talking about all the great dishes and desserts that we could bake together. I was completely charged up! I decided that I was going to give it a serious shot.

I owe my baking skills to Ina Garten. I recently received a copy of Barefoot Contessa’s ‘Back to Basics’ book as a house warming present. I started to read it and soon it became my ‘Bible!’. I’ve since read a lot of her books and watch each and every show of her’s on food network. It is so well explained and shown that baking becomes simple and easy. In fact that’s the only television I see. Ina is my guru! These days, whenever there is a party it’s a given that dessert will be brought by Asmita. My friends have affectionately  named me ‘The Dessert Queen’. A title that I am most proud of!

I threw a big bash at our house on New Year’s Eve in 2009. I served warm brownies with vanilla ice cream and also made them my party favors for the guests to take home. Boy, were they HAPPY! What a great way to start the New Year and my baking!
